WATERBURY — Aurea DeJesus Lopes Tavares, 84, passed away on Thursday, April 3, 2014, at Waterbury Hospital. She was the wife of the late Joao A. Tavares.
She was predeceased by two brothers, Leonel Alves and Antonio Rodrigues, and her nephew, John Alves.
Mrs. Tavares was born on Jan. 7, 1930, in Ferreiroz do Dao, Portugal, the daughter of the late Jose Lopes Alves and Levinia DeJesus Alves. She worked for Uniroyal Chemical and Naugatuck Glass for many years before retiring. She was a communicant of Our Lady of Fatima Church in Waterbury and the Portuguese Club Ladies Auxiliary.
She is survived by a brother, Joaquim Lopes Alves of Portugal; and several nephews and nieces, Jose A. Lopes of Danbury, Amandio N. Alves of Naugatuck, Jose N. Alves of Watertown, Lucilia Alves of Clermont, Fla., Luciano A. Lopes of Leesburg, Fla., Teresa M. Lopes of Naugatuck, Maria H. Alves of Guilford, Isabel Marques of Clermont, Fla., Antonio A. Lopes of Apopka, Fla., and Fernando Rodrigues of Portugal.
A special thank you for the wonderful care that Aurea received at Waterbury Hospital.
The funeral service for Mrs. Tavares will be held on Tuesday, April 8, 2014, at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Fatima Church, 2071 Baldwin St., Waterbury. Family and friends are asked to meet directly at the church. Burial will be in St. James Cemetery. Friends may call at the Buckmiller Brothers Funeral Home, 82 Fairview Ave., Naugatuck, on Monday evening from 5 to 7 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to either VNA of Waterbury, 50 Brookside Road, Waterbury, CT 06708; or Our Lady of Fatima Building Fund, 2071 Baldwin St., Waterbury, CT 06706.
