Obituary for Josephine Gibino

Josephine Gibino
Naugatuck, CT Miss Josephine Gibino, 95, died peacefully in hospice care at St. Mary's Hospital on April 10, 2016.

She was born March 19, 1921 in Naugatuck, the only child of the late Carmela "Mamie" (Aquavia) Gibino and Charles Gibino. She was a graduate of Naugatuck High School and Albertus Magnus College and earned a Masters Degree in teaching from the University of Connecticut. Miss Gibino was a devoted teacher at Salem Grammar School in Naugatuck for 37 years. She was earnestly committed to her students who she treated as part of her extended family.

Miss Gibino was a faithful communicant and lifelong parishioner of St. Francis of Assisi Church in Naugatuck. She lived her Catholic faith and generously supported her church as well as many other charitable causes in her community. Her contributions to St. Francis of Assisi Church included her acquisition of a special cross in Italy which was installed in the church. She also donated funds for the complete refurbishing of the church's round stained glass window above the church's entrance.

Miss Gibino was well respected by her neighbors, friends, students and colleagues and for many years after her retirement from teaching spoke with great affection of her rewarding years at Salem School. Miss Gibino traveled extensively with her parents and particularly enjoyed family trips to Italy, the country of her father’s birth.

Special thanks and recognition are given to Phoebe Drown of Naugatuck who lovingly cared for Josephine and earlier for her parents for over 20 years.

Miss Gibino was beloved and will be remembered for her gentle nature, humble kindness and generosity of spirit.

Miss Gibino is survived by her aunt, Pina Bonano and Pina's son, Dr. Joseph Bonano and several cousins.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, April 15, 2016 at 11:00am at St. Francis of Assisi Church, 318 Church Street, Naugatuck. Burial will follow in St. James Cemetery, Naugatuck.
