Marie "Sis"  Lowe
NAUGATUCK, CT Marie “Sis” (McSherry) Lowe, 92, of Naugatuck, the widow of Edward C. Lowe, died Wednesday at her home surrounded by her loving family.
Mrs. Lowe was born September 8, 1921 in Waterbury a daughter of the late Hugh and Marie (McCarthy) McSherry, and had been a lifelong Naugatuck resident.
Sis graduated from Salem School and Naugatuck High School and had worked as a bookkeeper at the Eastern Company. She was an active volunteer for many organizations from 1947 to 2009. Sis was the Past President of the Naugatuck Junior Women’s Club, helped organize the first American Cancer Society drive in Naugatuck and created the first teen center at the Glee Theater. A tireless volunteer, Sis was an organizing parent and timer for the first Naugatuck Girl’s Swim Club, run by Alex “Gimbo” Sullivan, and represented the team at swim meets throughout the state. In conjunction with the Y.M.C.A., Sis organized a Naugatuck Red Cross swim instruction program and proudly coordinated the first swim instruction program for the handicapped in Connecticut. Sis was involved in Naugatuck politics and was appointed by Former Mayor Joseph C. Raytkwich to the planning and zoning commission. Sis served on many committees of the State and Waterbury Master Plumbers Associations, and was a Past President and Vice President of the Waterbury Women’s Association and a Past President of the State Women’s Association. She also did volunteer work for Easter Seals and the State of Connecticut Elderly Finance Services. Sis was a member and former trustee of the B.P.O. Elks, Naugatuck Lodge 967 and a communicant of St. Francis of Assisi Church.
Sis is survived by her daughter Christine Lowe Kuczenski and her husband Henry of Naugatuck, her son Robert Lowe and his wife Karen of Goshen, CT, her brother John “Jack” McSherry of Naugatuck, her grandson Shawn Kuczenski and his wife Karen, her grandson Jay Kuczenski and his wife Sue, her grandchildren Devin and Anna Lowe, her great grandchildren Michael, Amber, Brandon, Tyler, Shealynn and Alex Kuczenski, several nieces and nephews, and grand nieces and grand nephews.
The funeral will be held Tuesday, September 2, 2014 at 10:15am from the Buckmiller Thurston Mengacci Funeral Home, 82 Fairview Avenue, to St. Francis of Assisi Church for a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00am. Burial will follow in St. James Cemetery. Calling hours are Monday from 4:00 to 7:00pm. The Naugatuck Elks will perform a Ritual Monday at 6:15pm at the funeral home.
